Where Murnau brews its beer

Fresh, house-brewed and naturally cloudy

The copper brewing kettles stand right inside the listed courtyard house. This is where the beers are made that are tapped fresh just a few steps away. Honest craft, brewed in line with the German Purity Law.

Welcome to the brewery

Beer made inside the house

The Griesbräu is a genuine in-house brewery: the beer is brewed right in the courtyard house and tapped next door in the brewpub and the beer garden. The path from kettle to glass is rarely this short. All beers are naturally cloudy, unfiltered and brewed without additives in line with the Bavarian Purity Law.

Brewing has been documented at this site under the Griesbräu name since 1836. Owner Michael Gilg revived the brewing operation in the year 2000 and brought beer culture back to the heart of Murnau.

History

More than 300 years of brewing on Obermarkt

From the earliest roots of the brewing craft to today's in-house brewery: the key milestones of the Griesbräu.

  1. 1676

    The origins

The roots of brewing on Obermarkt reach back to the year 1676. Even then, beer was part of daily life in Murnau.

  2. 1836

    The Griesbräu name

Brewing at this site has been documented under the Griesbräu name since 1836. The courtyard house on Obermarkt became a fixture for good beer.

  3. 2000

    The revival

Michael Gilg revives the brewing operation and brings freshly tapped, house-brewed beer back into the historic courtyard house.

  4. Today

    Living beer culture

Brewmaster Philip Walter brews naturally cloudy core beers and regularly develops new recipes. The Griesbräu remains a place where beer means joy.

The brewmaster

Philip Walter at the kettle

Brewmaster Philip Walter is responsible for the Griesbräu beers, from the malt to the finished brew. With a fine feel for craft and raw materials, he keeps the core beers at a consistently high standard.

At the same time he loves to try new things: fresh recipes and seasonal beers appear regularly, available only at the Griesbräu and only for a short time. That way every visit stays a small discovery.

Our beers

Core beers from the brewhouse

Three classics, tapped fresh all year round. Naturally cloudy, unfiltered and brewed in line with the Purity Law.

Griesbräu Hell

Our golden lager: smooth, malt-forward and pleasantly mild. The everyday beer for any occasion, straight from the house.

Griesbräu Weisse

Naturally cloudy wheat beer with a fine yeast note and a creamy head. Fruity, lively and typically Bavarian.

Werdenfelser Ur-Dunkel

A dark beer with a robust malt body and notes of caramel and bread crust. Full-bodied and rooted in the region.

Seasonal beers

Twice a year, special beers come out of the brewhouse, brewed to suit the season.

Spring and summer

Sommerfrische

The light, refreshing beer for warm days in the beer garden. Pale, lively and made for the sun above lake Staffelsee.

Autumn and winter

Maior

The strong seasonal beer for the cooler months. Amber-coloured, malt-forward and full-bodied, a beer to savour.
